I ein tynnsliten frottéhandduk, i salt­utslaget på ein murvegg, i gulna lakk, i svartbrend bark. Kva hender når blikket treff dei ytre laga av ting, kva er det som oppstår då? 2. I utstillinga si på Kunstnerforbundet visar Cato Løland ein ny serie vegg­hengte skulpturar, med skjelett av armerings­jern og metall­netting som glimtvis kjem til syne under materiala som dekker dei. Dei kan minne om over­dimen­sjonerte belg­kapslar, snitta på langs, slik at ein kan studere innsida. Her finst det ei vilje til å syne fram, kunne ein tenke, men den blir brote av med ei trong til å dekke til. Tekstil­bitar heng som slør eller i laser, over formene. Den krumma fasongen gjer at innsida av skulpturane er delvis skuggelagte. Det er ingenting inne i belgane, kunne ein sagt, i alle fall ingen perleforma frukter som ligg klare. Så blir blikket i staden retta mot skalet, mot behaldaren: mot kva behaldaren består av, og kva den likevel rommar. 3. Dei første åra av utdanningsløpet til Cato, studerte han fotografi. Det er ikkje fotografi han jobbar med no, men det hender at han sender meg bilde, av ting han har fått auge på og kjenner seg inspirert av, underlege kvar­dags­motiv. To ventilasjons­slangar hengande ut frå eit ope vindauge, som tarmar, parallelle. Ein halvt riven bygard, der det som kjem til syne ikkje er møblar eller ting, men materiala under kledningen – isolasjon og dekk­plast som heng i filler frå etasjane. Med blikket byggar han eit arkiv av overflatar og former. Blinkande sjøvatn som skyl inn mot ei bergsprekk, blir eit midlertidig relieff. Ein nedtråkka jordflekk ved eit skogbryn, fotspor fylde opp med mørkt sorpevatn: ei studie i fuktig svart. 4. Ein kunne tenke på skulpturane som ein slags rekon­struksjonar, av flyktige komposisjonar som desse, der enkelte strukturar og fenomen går igjen. Lysspel, mørke. Dekke, klede. Spor. Vatn. Opningar, behaldarar, årer. 5. Eller for å starte i ein annan ende: Cato jobbar med dekonstruert materiale. Metall­skjeletta til dei store skulpturane er kledde med oppstykka tøy, papir, plast og folie. Lag på lag. Om ein går nære og leitar, kan ein for eksempel finne den ein gong mjuke, no målingsstive innsida av ein college­genser. Og jeans­stoff, nylon av typen ein brukar til smykke­posar, papir hardna av lim, det framleis synlege stripe­mønsteret frå eit ribbe­strikka plagg. Han samlar på materiale, ofte frå gamle klede. Det er materiala som leiar vegen, kunne ein hevde frå dette perspektivet. 6. Enkelte materiale, planter, strå som veks i veg­kanten, for eksempel, veit eg korleis kjennest ut berre ved å sjå på dei. Eg veit korleis dei oppfører seg, kor laust eller hardt korna sit fast i festene sine, kor vidt dei enkelt vil losne om eg pressar dei mellom fingrane og drar. Eg veit korleis det stive skalet til kornet trevlar seg på langs, om eg tyggar på det; inni finst det ein mjølen kjerne. Når eg ser skulp­turane til Cato, er det som eg i eit auge­blikk veit noko tilsvarande om dei, men så glepp det. 7. Dei belgliknande skulpturane er doble, ei lang­­strekt form stabla oppå ei anna. Formene er ikkje identiske, men dei er av same art. Festa i kvarandre med armering heng dei så tett at dei somme stader overlappar. Dei delar infra­struktur. Paret, det doble, er eit gjen­takande element i Cato sitt kunst­nar­skap. Ta verks­serien Ventilere, som blei vist på Kunstgarasjen i Bergen sommaren 2024 – den bestod òg av doble, lang­strekte, og om ein vil, skalliknade former. Men dei formene var konvekst krumma, og vende utsida mot betraktaren. Likevel fekk ein glimt av skulpturen sine indre lag, gjennom halv­måne­forma hòl i overflata. No, på Kunstner­for­bundet, er det som at verka har snudd magen til, lete seg ytterlegare eksponere. 8. Saman med dei store skulpturane på Kunst­ner­forbundet, finst det ein serie med mindre verk. Ein kan få føre seg at dei liknar alle slags hole saker: gapande munnar, fiske­skrog, krabbe­skjel, berg­hòler. Dei er laga av denim, Cato har klipt laus lommane frå dongeri­bukser, fridd dei frå plagget. Ein lomme liknar ikkje berre ein behaldar, den er ein behaldar. Jeans­lommane, som har lagt tett inntil nokon sine lysker, som har hatt romsterande fingrar pressande mot stoffet, er no gjort om til vegg­hengte skulpturar som liksom ser tilbake på oss. Gjennom­trekte av gips har dei blitt eigne kroppar. What kind of information exists in the outer layers of things? In a threadbare terry towel, in salt efflorescence on a brick wall, in yellowed lacquer, in charred bark. What happens when the gaze touches the outermost layers—what emerges in that moment? 2. In his exhibition at Kunstnerforbundet, Cato Løland presents a new series of wall-mounted sculptures with skeletons made of rebar and wire mesh, occasionally visible beneath the materials that cover them. They resemble oversized seed pods, sliced lengthwise to reveal their insides. One might think there’s a desire to reveal here—but that impulse is interrupted by a need to conceal. Pieces of fabric hang like veils or ragged strips over the forms. The curved shapes leave the interiors of the sculptures partially in shadow. “There’s nothing inside the pods,” one might say—at least no pearl-shaped fruits waiting to be discovered. So instead, the gaze is directed to the shell, the container: to what it consists of, and what it still manages to hold. 3. In the early years of his studies, Cato focused on photography. He no longer works with that medium, but he still sends me pictures—odd everyday scenes that catch his attention and inspire him. Two ventilation ducts hanging out of an open window like parallel intestines. A half-demolished building revealing not furniture or objects, but the materials beneath the cladding—insulation and sheeting hanging in tatters from the floors. Through his gaze, he builds an archive of surfaces and forms. Sunlight glinting off seawater flowing into a rock crevice becomes a temporary relief. A trampled patch of earth at the edge of a forest, footprints filled with murky puddles—a study in wet black. 4. One might think of the sculptures as reconstructions of fleeting compositions like these—where certain structures and phenomena recur: light play, darkness. Covers, clothing. Traces. Water. Openings, vessels, veins. 5. Or to start elsewhere: Cato works with deconstructed materials. The metal skeletons of the large sculptures are clad with fragments of textile, paper, plastic, and foil. Layer upon layer. If you get close and look carefully, you might spot the once-soft, now paint-stiffened inside of a sweatshirt. And denim, nylon like that used for jewelry pouches, paper stiffened with glue, the still-visible ribbed pattern from a knitted garment. He collects materials, often from old clothes. From this perspective, you could say the materials lead the way. 6. Some materials—plants, roadside straws, for instance—I know how they feel just by looking at them. I know how they behave, how tightly or loosely the seeds sit in their sockets, how easily they come loose if I press and pull with my fingers. I know how the stiff husk frays along the grain if I chew it; inside is a floury core. When I see Cato’s sculptures, for a moment I feel I know something similarly about them— but then it slips away. 7. The pod-like sculptures are doubled—an elongated form stacked atop another. The forms aren’t identical, but they are of the same kind. Bound together with rebar, they hang so close that they overlap in some places. They share infrastructure. The pair, the double, is a recurring element in Cato’s practice. Take the series Ventilere, shown at Kunstgarasjen in Bergen in summer 2024—it also consisted of doubled, elongated, shell-like forms. But those forms were convex, turned outward to face the viewer. Still, you could glimpse the internal layers of the sculptures through crescent-shaped holes in the surface. Now, at Kunstnerforbundet, it’s as if the works have turned their bellies toward us, exposing themselves even further. 8. Alongside the large sculptures at Kunstnerforbundet is a series of smaller works. One might imagine they resemble all kinds of hollow things: gaping mouths, fish carcasses, crab shells, caves. They’re made of denim—Cato has cut the pockets from jeans, freeing them from the garments. A pocket doesn’t just resemble a vessel—it is one. These jeans pockets, once pressed close to someone’s hips, once filled with rummaging fingers, have now become wall-mounted sculptures that seem to gaze back at us. Soaked in plaster, they’ve become bodies of their own. Mouth (IV), 2024 Stål, tekstil, spray- og akrylmaling og lim 210 x 80 x 40 cm Between Rivers brings together the practices of contemporary artists who respond to the place of rivers in our lives at a moment when they are being profoundly reshaped by human activity. While rivers have been an important subject for artists since at least the nineteenth century and are at the center of significant developments in fields as varied as sociology, political organization, and the built environment, in recent years they have been discussed with an increasing urgency. Reports of major rivers dropping to their lowest levels on record have appeared alongside accounts of atmosphe­ric rivers causing severe flooding. Systems that are crucial to the functioning of our contemporary world, such as the production of hydroelectricity, food security, and global transportation networks, are being profoundly impacted. Simultaneously, the recognition of indigenous definitions of rivers, and the expansion of scientific and legal ones, are changing what we mean by the term. The artists included in Between Rivers propose new ways of reading and imagining rivers. While many of the works are characterized by modes of expression that are particular to each artist’s practice—perhaps unsurprising given the challenge of representing a subject that is at once fixed and relentlessly in motion—they are nonetheless related by the image, process, or material of a river. Several of the works, including those by Zoe Leonard, Marjetica Potrč, and Thao Nguyen Phan, directly reference significant river systems. They examine the subject’s entanglement with territory and identity, resource extraction, and religious or folkloric symbols and narratives. Cato Løland and Senga Nengudi respond to rivers more obliquely. Its characteristics are a catalyst for the creation of new work, or a framing device to understand a practice differently. The histories of people and objects that have transited across these bodies of water, are present in the work of Alex Ayed, Anna Boghiguian, Reena Saini Kallat, and James Webb. The material of a river and what gathers next to it—its liquid body, the soil along its banks, and the plants that grow there—form the materials used in Delcy Morelos and Hicham Berrada’s installations. Lala Rukh’s drawings on photographic paper, which close the exhibition, distill an acute vision that is at once meditative and persistent—a vision that was never far from the complex social environment she inhabited and sought to change. VentilereKunstgarasjen 10.5 - 23.6.2024 Korleis materialisere eit tomrom? I Cato Lølands utstilling Absorbere. Ventilere er det kanskje eit særskilt fokus på tomrommet, i eit nærvær av fråvær. Positivt rom og negativt rom avsløre kvarandre. Arbeida er gjenferd av konturar, tomrom og ulike augneblink som ein gong var, men aldri kjem attende. Fråvær er nokon gangar like prekært som nærvær. Når ein mistar noko og berre det negative rommet blir att, vil det likevel minne oss om det som ikkje er der. Det negative rommets vakuum er bitande, gjennom alt det andre, som framleis er. Fram til tomt og fullt blir eitt. Om ein høyrer etter, kan ein høyre ekko og sjå omrisset av ting. Ting som ikkje er handgripelege. Etter at handa hans forlét arbeida, blir likevel gesten igjen. Eg opplever at materiale i arbeidet hans ikkje berre er det handgripelege, det som ein kan stille seg ved og ta på. Kanskje til og med er dei først og fremst ikkje handgripelege. Dei består kanskje av minner, aningar og kjensler. Arbeida hans både er, ikkje er, og både er og ikkje er på éin gong. Dei har korkje ein start eller ein slutt, dei har korkje éin start eller éin slutt. Å vere noko inneber sjeldan å vere éin ting om gangen. Hierarkia vi brukar for samhandel med tinga rundt oss, styrer korleis vi flettar dei inn i vevnaden. Vi blir fortalde kva som passar, kva som er viktig og kva som ikkje er viktig. I livets store vevnad er det vanskeleg å skilje mellom enkeltting. Sidan det er umogleg å vere éin. Alt er ulike utsnitt og avkapp. Små skuggar av større ting. Då eg er i samtale med Løland, får det meg til å tenkje på korleis vi stadig de- og rekonstruerer minna våre. Sjølv om vi kanskje har ei kjensle av at minner berre blir lagra på ein trygg stad til vi tar dei fram att. Slik ein gjer med foto i fotoalbum. Vi ønsker og håpar at vi kan fange dei og halde dei trygge. Men minna våre skvulpar og renn, vrir og vender seg. Eg trur ikkje det er rart at eg tenkjer på fotografi medan vi pratar saman. Han fortel meg at han tidlegare òg har jobba med foto. Materiala Løland vanlegvis nyttar seg av er materiale som har falle ut av sine opphavlege samanhengar og funksjonsmiljø. Amorfe utsnitt og avkapp av materiale som ikkje er viktig lenger. Ideen om funksjon er avhengig av korleis du brukar eit objekt eller materiale - kva potensiale og løfter vi kan gi til tinga vi omgir oss med. Om komponentar blir satt ut av samanhengane dei blei skapt til, mistar dei lett sin vitalitet. Dei glir ut av vevnaden, og blir bleike og lause trådar. I openheit og fridom frå konvensjonar, har kanskje ting enklare for å gli mot ei tilhøyrsle. Lause trådar får nytt liv i dei vevde skulpturane til Løland. I nye materialfellesskap, gjenfødd og transformert. I utstillinga kan du syne ein vegg med krumma skall, med si tomme innside vendt mot tilskodaren, kor ein ikkje riktig veit om dei beskyttar seg eller eksponerer seg - eller om dei gjer begge ting på éin gang. Dei er samanstilte på ein vegg, kor dei multipliserer seg. Kor kvar litle remse av overskottekstil, plastsøppel og andre sediment har fått vekse seg store. I utstillinga viser han også nye avstøypingar i gips. Avstøypingane er frå dongeribukser. Eit plagg som riktignok blei til med utgangspunkt i at det skulle vere eit arbeidsplagg, då det var meir slitesterkt enn dei fleste andre tekstilar. I dag er jeans i stor grad eit plagg for alle, og er ikkje først og fremst knytt til blåsnippar. På desse skulpturane har ein opningar, som kan minne om pustehol, eller skyvedører. Løland forsøker ikkje å tvinge fram ei sanning som er større enn andre sanningar. Det som er, eruansett, uavhengig av vår vilje. Uavhengig om vokabularet vårt tillét tunga vår å teikne ei konkret form. Løland er ikkje redd for å øydelegge. Alt kan reparerast. Chest (Yellow Drizzle) Entrée is proud to present Cato Løland’s most recent body of work at Paris Internationale. In his new series of sculptures entitled Chests, Løland has sought to locate similar forms in nature and within the body itself. The resulting sculptures reference ribcages and avian nests. Twisted wires and bent curtain rods create a rigid armature on which the artist has woven scraps of plastic, netting, delicate fabrics, plaster-wrapped bands, and organic materials such as seaweeds, grasses, flower petals, and branches. The forms are largely spherical and self-contained, they interact by latching on to the existing architecture much as nests cling to the branches of trees and sheer faces of cliffs. Detritus cast aside and rescued from alleyways can be found alongside torn pieces of clothing and high-quality silk and metals. &nbsp;Cato Løland’s work has a playful odor and refuses to get categorized, it questions hierarchies within materials and techniques. He is particularly drawn to industrially produced materials as they offer an opportunity for the reintroduction of the human hand in their creation – for reanimation. Kartong frå felleskapet sine papircontainarar er omdanna til temporære former, som arkitektoniske kroppar liggande på golvet, halvvegs opne halvvegs lukka, utan noko tilsynelatande funksjon utover å vere berende struktur for tekstilet som fullfører skulpturen si form. It’s perhaps a collector’s fortune to have eyes fixed persistently to the ground, with the gaze roaming the surface. Ready to witness all the world's potential in what one collects. Whether or not the collector on this day searched for rocks, twigs, or something altogether different, is unknown. In written sources this particular collector is simply stated as «independent». Perhaps it was a coincidence, a random chance taking place. A lucky kick to the right stone. Regardless, the wandering collector found her. Little Ida, with baby teeth still intact. Right there in the mining landscape, where they boiled oil out of slates, twisted liquids out of stones for more than a hundred years. How long had she been laying there? The last time those baby teeth hungrily gnawed leaves and grass was 47 million years ago. In 1982 another collector was born, growing up in a small town along the Western coast of Norway. The collector bites his baby teeth, dreams himself off to another place while kicking rocks and seeing all the world's potential. In a tiny thread, a random rock, in a pipeline bleached from the sun. To some, romance lies within the reassuring certainty of knowing that what has once risen from the soil, shall return. Leaving no traces, as if life’s purpose is to go through it as silently as one entered into it. Degradable, ecological, natural colour. The collector shakes his head, kicks the right twig, and gnaws his teeth, rounding them like the ocean grinds rocks. He knows what everyone from small places knows, that romance and nearness to the soil doesn’t stem from this, this compulsion to leave life without leaving traces in it.47 million years later a future collector arrives, with eyes fixed to the ground. Another twig is stepped on, a different leaf is turned, a random stone gets kicked. Maybe it is coincidental. A rare occasion where luck meets potential. There he is. Cato. Speculations running high. Cato is not alone down there, in the dark soil. Not biodegradable, not ecological. He lies swaddled in neon coloured polyester, something by his side stretching out of itself and beyond the human body. A tool? A utensil? An elongation of all the world's potential? Scientific societies are scratching their heads, trying to grasp the intangible. What do they all mean, these constructions buried in the soil?Cato Catcher of Butterflies, Cato Warrior, Cato Runner of Long Distances and Leaper of Great Heights? Cato Conundrum. And these objects by his side. Are they traces of old hunting methods? Do they speak of the need for shelter, safety, and protection? Are they tributes to beings from ancient time, a prayer of rain, remains from a great party? On Saturdays, columns of food swaddled in thin layers of metal are devoured to celebrate. Flakes of aluminium fall to the ground. Meanwhile Cato keeps his peace, no word to get from him. What made him laugh? What did he believe in? What happened?All the world's potential: a cocoon of satin, viscose, and shoulder pads. Is it possible to collect functions? To collect is to think about the future, to have a sense of what might happen when luck meets potential. Pluck the right fibre, save corners of cloth, intertwine old sheets. What one collects, one ultimately also needs to provide a space for. Tie together, enter into a larger whole. With strips, with tape and with knots. Close encounters. Sharp sticks, tight laces. Is it easier to stand pressure when the rope that tightens is tied with a bow? Is that what happened to Ida, veins of blood circling around, tightening in? Ida is so close to completion. Only one leg is missing. An incomplete collection; the missing leg. So how about you, Cato? 47 million years is a long time. Even for rocks. Sticks of steel forcing itself out, pushing itself up and forward as the foreign object of the world. A missing leg, a dawning exoskeleton? Synthetic and regenerated fibres which soften under heat, melts together and fixates into form when cooled down. Like the spring in a clothing pin, holding onto textiles fluttering like flags in the wind. Cato forced cold sticks of steel through smooth silk, throwing spears in crisp tulle. Cato carefully caressed all the world's potential, melting it into shapes. Water abandoning iron, liquid flowing from stones. Tributes to ancient times, a prayer for rain. Torn pieces of garments made for parties layered on top of one another, seeking each other out and turning into concave and convex shapes. A semicircle closed and open. A shield against the world, a net to catch her. This as well comes from the pure, innocent soil. Polyester sweeping like skin over leaves and stems of plants. Cuticle, a membrane protecting the plant against its own water leaving. Cuticle, one of the most resistant parts of the plant, preserved within fossils. Like little Ida, with baby teeth intact. As fossils slowly become hydrocarbon, in 47 million years being converted into oil, vinyl or perhaps shoulder pads of polyester. You as shelter, me as shelter # IV The series of sculptures, each individually titled You as shelter, me as shelter (2020) was created during a residency at Surnadal Billag. The small village of Surnadal is located along the mid-western coast of Norway, and is surrounded by mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. This is a notable contrast to the industrial and urban environments, and their resultant materials, that the artist usually encounters traveling to and from his studio in the city of Bergen. In keeping with his methodology, Løland took very little with him to the residency, preferring to gather materials locally for the creation of his work. Due to his surroundings, these salvaged objects contained more organic and less industrial materials than usual. Thus sticks, leaves, and bark featured in many of these distinctive works. In some ways, all of Løland’s work reflects the places in which they are made. However, the sculptures created in Surnadal feel truly site-specific as they were crafted on site rather than in a studio or gallery setting. They incorporate not only his previous conceptual leanings, but also take into account the relationship of architecture between the setting and the human body. Despite its idyllic surroundings, the residency itself was housed inside of a large, empty bus station. The building was intimidatingly cavernous, echoing and anonymous. Løland responded to the visceral feeling of the space by creating shapes inspired by the Norwegian “gapahuk”, or lean-to; simple constructions hastily built to serve as temporary shelters in the wild. Løland wanted to add a body-based shape to the architecture as a counter to the barren, inhuman space. These constructions are architectures built around imagined bodies, and are inseparable from the bodies that they would shelter. In this, these structures are reminiscent not only of the manmade gapahuk, but also animal dens, insect cocoons, bird nests, and other structures in nature quotidian to specific species. This is the original architecture, a shelter that is formed by and morphs along with the bodies of living animals. It is a refreshing reminder that humans too are animals in our most basic nature, both in need of and capable of building shelters for ourselves. Familiar reanimates buildings, remembers them as living entities inseparable from those bodies that they were created to house. These sculptures feel alive in and of themselves, apart from the hands that made them. The branches, woven chicken wire, and netting form limbs and skins and read as mythical animals come to life. The figures placed about the room walk, perch, and recline on the ground, both eerie and nonthreatening. The title of the collection in its entirety, Familiar, is on the nose. As in the vast majority of Løland’s artworks, these objects are vaguely recognizable, comforting and yet strange. They are alluring and invite interaction beyond mere observation. Yet there is another meaning here. In English, the word “familiar” connotes that which is well known, something or someone that has been encountered previously. However, in Norwegian, the word “familiar” signifies a close familial relationship or family structure. Once again, these constructions come alive. The sculptures could be seen as a family unit of built structures, returning the built environment back into the purview of the living.&nbsp; In alignment with the idea of the gapahuk, all the artworks created during the residency were dismantled at the end of the residency and the materials returned to nature (where appropriate), much as a gapahuk would be taken apart and scattered as the hiker continues his or her journey. Most of Løland’s work is in some state of evolutionary flux. However, the decisive beginning and end of the Familiar project reads as a self-contained exercise within Løland’s larger practice. Ham # I,&nbsp;Ham # II In the exhibition Albogerom Løland presents new sculptural works resulting from his exploration of the textile medium and its potential to evoke memories and feelings through relations between the body, the architecture and the material. Løland is interested in the physicality, value and function of textiles as well as the qualities enabling them to be used as markers of identity. In his works he combines, emphasises and displaces these values in order to open up for new readings and interpretations. The exhibited works show clear traces of Løland’s physical treatment of his materials. The creation process alternates between being refined and time-consuming and brutal and improvised. The works are simultaneously opaque and transparent, open and closed, and they have an insisting presence despite their low-key and almost dissolved expression. Certain sculptural works contain imprints from his own body, thus establishing a fluid exchange between his body, the gallery space and the materials.
